Telemis and the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia.
The “Istituto Europeo di Oncologia” (“IEO”) in Milan is a comprehensive cancer centre with research laboratories, clinical facilities (since 1994) and 226 inpatient beds.
With 60.000 radiological examinations per year, the Insitute’s aim is to provide a prompt diagnostic response both for patients admitted to the Institute and for patients referred from outside. The diagnostic area is equipped with an extremely modern laboratory for investigating clinical cases and for performing procedures such as screening programmes for the control of symptom-free subjects at risk for cancer.
Why a PACS ?
Oncology requires a lot of comparisons between “today’s images” and previous examinations. Moreover, today’s modern radiological devices are producing more and more images. Therefore, the IEO has decided to invest in the latest PACS technologies. The solution that has been installed, called Telemis-Medical, is being distributed in Italy by the company Soft&Hard in.
What has been implemented ?
During the last eight months, all the images have been medically compressed and digitally stored on a server (including mammography). All archived images are virtually accessible in a few seconds inside the institution. The complete system also includes a high level of security, in order to guarantee patient confidentiality.
This project called CIMS (Clinical Image Management System) started together with the external distribution solution (TM-Publisher), allowing the patient to receive a CD-ROM or paper instead of X-ray films.

What are the benefits ?
The first perceived benefit is medical. Having all the previous examinations immediately available greatly improves the quality of the diagnosis.
The combination of paper and CD-ROM gives more and clearer information to the external referring physician.
In terms of economic benefit, the decrease in the number of X-ray films produced very interesting results, allowing for investment in new technologies. Thanks to the cost-effectiveness of the solution, this PACS/CIMS technology is now a reality at the “Istituto Europeo di Oncologia”.
